Nursing Career Areas

With many different nursing departments and sub-specialties, Gillette offers ample opportunities for nursing careers and professional advancement.

Nursing Administration

Careers in nursing administration involve overseeing initiatives for quality improvement, patient safety, team integration, staff engagement and program development.

Inpatient Nursing

Gillette’s five inpatient care units provide a wide range of nursing career opportunities. Nurses care for patients recovering from traumatic injuries, following major surgery, undergoing inpatient rehabilitation and more. They also play a vital role in educating patients and families about their care.

We offer inpatient nursing opportunities in:

Outpatient Nursing

Nurses who work in our outpatient clinics provide direct patient care during appointments and address questions and concerns over the phone. Nurses also coordinate care among multiple specialties, ensuring patients see all of the providers they need during one visit. To see all of our outpatient clinic locations, visit Directions & Locations.

Perianesthesia and Surgical Nursing

Perianesthesia nurses care for patients before and immediately following surgery and tests that involve anesthesia. They prepare patients both physically and emotionally while supporting families.

Surgical nurses play a key role on operating room teams along with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists and surgical technicians.  Careful preparation and routines ensure the best possible outcomes following complex procedures.

New Patient Nursing

Before a first appointment with a Gillette physician, we provide some families with a nurse to help them prepare for their child’s visit. New patient nurses discuss needs and goals, review records and match patients with appropriate Gillette specialists and services.

Triage Nursing

Gillette triage nurses speak with parents or caregivers by phone to assess the severity of symptoms and determine patient needs. Using this information, they guide parents or caregivers on appropriate care and, if needed, coordinate an appointment with a Gillette provider.

Engaged Professional Practice Model

Gillette’s engaged professional practice model describes our philosophies on four cornerstones of nursing: patient care, leadership, professionalism, and research and education.

Patient Care: Every Gillette nurse is fully committed to providing exceptional patient care and service to our patient families at all times.

Leadership: Gillette nurses are leaders in enhancing the experiences of patient families, working to advance the profession of nursing, and in championing hospital-wide quality and safety initiatives.

Professionalism: Gillette nurses consistently act with integrity and accountability. Actions are fair, truthful and straightforward at all times.

Education and Research: Nurses at Gillette know that continued research can improve outcomes for children with disabilities, and that education is essential to developing the next generation of nurse leaders.

Nursing Practice

Gillette has a history of longevity among its nursing staff. In fact, 20 percent of our registered nurses have over 15 years of service to Gillette.

Opportunities for education and research, our team-oriented culture and clinical ladder support career development for nurses. As we encourage nurses to advance their professional practice at Gillette, we also want to capture their knowledge and expertise by providing them opportunities to teach and train the next generation.

Collaborative Governance

Collaborative governance empowers nurses to contribute to the decision-making process through committees and teams. It helps us practice the highest quality patient care, advance our professional practice model and continually improve our work environment.

Advanced Practice Nursing

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) at Gillette offers the level of experience and expertise needed to care for patients with short- and long-term disabilities.  APNs currently provide services in pediatric rheumatology, pediatric orthopedics, pediatric neurology and neurosurgery, developmental pediatrics, craniofacial services and adult services. Gillette supports the pursuit of APN designation by holding on-site college fairs and subsidizing a portion of tuition for employed nurses.

Nursing Informatics

An important sub-specialty of nursing new at Gillette, Nursing Informatics (NI) integrates information technology solutions to manage data and information, analyze information and to create knowledge and wisdom that informs nurses in care of the patient. NI continues Gillette's history of innovation by placing emphasis on the representation of nursing care in the electronic health record for the unique clients served by Gillette.

NI works in partnership with other departments to monitor patient outcomes, identify best practices in nursing and to document the work of the nurse in a standardized way. In raising visibility for nursing at Gillette, NI supports nursing leadership within the larger health care community by demonstrating improved patient outcomes, and the consistent nursing care that supports those outcomes.
