FOR SCHOOLS
Making the Grade in Inclusion:
Awareness, Attitude, Accessibility
Since 1897, Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare has been providing medical, rehabilitative and familial support for children with disabilities and chronic conditions. The hospital is only one part of the lives of these children. This unit brings suggestions and support for you -- the teachers -- who are so important in the development of all Minnesota children. The schools are a critical partner in assisting children with disabilities as our society works toward true inclusion. This section includes introductory material for staff and suggested lesson plans for grades K-2, 3-4 and 5-6.
Implementation of both the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act is vital for all children. Encouraging all children to accept and appreciate diversity not only prepares all students for life, but fosters a society undivided by race, class, language or disability.
Awareness, Attitude and Accessibility -- these are the three As that will benefit everyone.
Gillette Children's is ready to support you as you develop your own program. Please call our Family Resource Center at (651) 229-3938 for help with specific programs or questions.
