Stephen Sundberg, M.D., Program Medical Director |
Gillette’s Center for Pediatric Orthopaedics specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complex orthopaedic problems that affect bones and muscles. Our pediatric orthopaedists provide specialized health-care to children and teens who have orthopaedic complications resulting from physical disabilities, traumatic injuries, neuromuscular conditions and acute musculoskeletal conditions.
One of Gillette’s busiest centers of care, the Center for Pediatric Orthopaedics serves patients from the Upper Midwest and throughout the world. We provide rehabilitation services that help children gain skills they need to become independent and self-sufficient. As children grow and develop, we adapt treatments and services to their changing needs.
Our Team Approach
Our medical specialists collaborate with patients, their families and other health-care providers to develop treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs. In addition to medical care, we provide rehabilitation services to help children gain skills they need to participate as fully as possible in all aspects of their everyday lives.

Center for Gait and Motion Analysis
The Center for Gait and Motion Analysis is a vital part of Gillette’s orthopaedic services. Advanced computer technology analyzes how a child’s muscles, joints and nerves work together to allow movement. Motion analysis helps us identify causes of movement problems so we can recommend the most effective treatments. Our Center for Gait and Motion Analysis team includes orthopaedists, technicians, engineers and physical therapists.
Pediatric Orthopaedics
Pediatric orthopaedic surgeons specialize in treating complex and rare orthopaedic conditions, including orthopaedic complications of cerebral palsy, spine conditions and complex fractures.
Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine
Pediatric rehabilitation medicine specialists evaluate children with orthopaedic complications before and after surgical procedures. They discuss the need for rehabilitation services with patients and families, order therapy, prescribe medications and recommend specialized equipment.
Rehabilitation Therapies
Our rehabilitation therapies department helps children gain the skills to be more self-sufficient. Occupational therapists help children improve hand and arm movement and increase their functional skills. Physical therapists monitor range of motion, strength and abilities, helping patients maximize their independence and mobility.
Assistive Technology Department
Our assistive-technology staff works with physcians and rehabilitation therapists to create equipment that helps people manage daily tasks, such as powered-wheelchair controls, communication devices, orthoses (braces) and prostheses. Our staff includes certified orthotists, prosthetists and assistive-technology specialists.
Child and Family Services
Gillette’s Child and Family Services department works closely with patients, families and Gillette’s medical staff. Social workers provide educational and emotional support to patients and families, while psychologists help patients cope with disabilities, pain and stress. Our Child Life Specialists help children cope with fears about medical procedures and concerns about hospitalization.
