Neurocutaneous Syndromes Clinic
Neurocutaneous syndromes are lifelong genetic conditions that cause tumors in the skin, brain, spine and central nervous system. While some syndromes can be diagnosed at birth, others don't produce symptoms until later in life.
The Neurocutaneous Syndromes Clinic helps patients and families understand the treatment options available for these complex syndromes. Because condition management requires a team of medical professionals, our clinic – a partnership between Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota and Gillette – coordinates specialists throughout the Twin Cities to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment tailored to the unique needs of each patient. We also offer genetic counseling and genetic testing for families.
Treatment
Although there is no cure for neurocutaneous syndromes, treatment can help patients manage symptoms and related health problems. Treatment involves a team of experts, including geneticists, neurologists, oncologists, ophthalmologists, orthopaedists, neurosurgeons and dermatologists.
Types of Neurocutaneous Syndromes
The most common types of neurocutaneous syndromes that affect children and adolescents are:
- Neurofibromatosis
- Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1)
- Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2)
- Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC)
- Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS)
