Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC)

TSC is a rare genetic disorder that causes benign tumors to grow in the brain, kidneys, heart, eyes, lungs and skin. It also impacts the central nervous system, causing kidney disease, skin abnormalities, developmental delays and behavioral problems. Other symptoms may include:

  • Brain lesions, including cortical tubers, subependymal nodules and subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGAs)
  • Seizures (in 60 to 90 percent of patients)
  • Gum fibromas and dental pitting

Treatment Options

  • Close monitoring for complications
  • Anti-seizure medication
  • Epilepsy surgery to reduce seizure occurrence
  • Laser therapy for skin abnormalities
  • Psychological treatment for behavioral issues
