If you’re considering becoming a volunteer at Gillette, you might have questions about our opportunities and the application process. Below are some of the questions that potential volunteers ask most frequently.

How long does the application and review process take?
The entire application and review process takes three to four weeks to complete.
I need 10 volunteer hours for a school project. Can I come in a couple times and play with or read to your patients?

Most volunteers come in once a week for a three-hour shift.
Will I get the volunteer position I asked for on my application?
We can’t guarantee open positions at all times. If the position you want isn’t available, we’ll put you on a waiting listing and contact you when we have an opening.
Can I request to volunteer in a department that isn’t listed on your website?
Sure! Let us know about your idea and we’ll see what we can do.
Do you have evening or weekend volunteer opportunities?
Yes, but most of our volunteer openings are for positions that we need on weekdays during business hours (between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.).
Can I get community service hours at Gillette?
We are unable to accommodate people who need to collect community service hours or meet court-mandated service requirements.
Do you offer internships?
Each department coordinates its own internships. Please check our Careers section information about learning and training opportunities.
I would like to find employment at Gillette. Does volunteering help me a job?
Not necessarily. Our Human Resources department arranges employment based on available openings and applicant qualifications.
Can I volunteer in physical therapy or occupational therapy specifically?
Can I rock babies?
We do not have a baby-rocking program at Gillette.
Can I work specifically with kids with cancer?
We serve children who have disabilities at Gillette.
Can my church/employee/school group come in and play with your patients?
Groups sometimes provide one-time activity sessions for our inpatients or participate in the Ronald McDonald Family Room Cooks for Kids program. Groups that wish to participate in Cooks for Kids should visit the Ronald McDonald Family Room volunteer page for more information.
Can I bring my certified therapy dog in to visit your patients
To be considered for our program, your dog must be certified by Pet Partners, TDIntl or TDInc, and the two of you have volunteered as a therapy team for at least one year. You may submit an application and follow our normal application process. Please also submit a reference letter from an organization that you and your dog have visited regularly as a therapy team. In addition, please submit your dog’s vaccination records. When we receive your application, we will contact you to set up an interview with you and your dog. Most of our therapy dog teams volunteer during weekday shifts. Some weekend and early evening shifts are available.
What is the dress code for volunteers?
Our volunteers reflect Gillette’s professional attitude. Clean and neat business-appropriate clothing is required. Good personal hygiene is expected. Prohibited dress includes blue jeans, t-shirts with slogans and pictures, flipflops or other sandal-type shoes, face piercings (such as nose, eyebrow and tongue rings), ear lobe stretchers, artificial nails and nail wraps. Dress code is discussed in volunteer orientation.
Can I donate gently-used stuffed animals and toys that my kids have outgrown?
For infection control and other health reasons, we only accept new stuffed animals (with tags attached) and new games and toys. If you are interested in purchasing new games and/or toys for our patients, please contact Child Life at 651-726-2694 for suggestions.
