Pediatric Quality and Patient Safety Conference: Collaborating to Make Pediatric Health Care Safer in Minnesota

Thursday, October 26, 2017 | 8:30am-4pm
Saint Paul RiverCentre

How can we more effectively collaborate to increase the quality and safety of pediatric health care? What are the obstacles and opportunities? Join us to explore how we can work together, improving quality and safety for our patients.

A conference for: physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, front line clinical staff from all disciplines, quality and safety leaders, and facilitators.

Keynote Speaker
Dr. Stephen Muething is co-director of the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and professor of pediatrics at The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Dr. Muething was recently awarded the Michael and Suzette Fisher Family Chair for Safety at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He now focuses on the strategic goals of Cincinnati Children’s to improve all aspects of care including safety, outcomes, experience and affordability. His improvement work and research focuses on high reliability culture, situation awareness, managing by prediction and lean leadership.

Dr. Muething was one of the founders of the Children’s Hospital Solution for Patient Safety and now serves as strategic advisor. This network of more than 100 children’s hospitals is collaborating to eliminate serious harm for all pediatric patients across the United States and Canada. He serves on multiple national pediatric safety groups and is a frequent consultant for regional, national and international safety and quality initiatives. He has lectured in more than a dozen countries.

Course Description
Presentations will include the power of collaboration both locally and nationally, panel discussion from regional health care leaders, and an opportunity to express your views on pediatric patient safety.

Course Objectives
At the completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify key strategies for implementing an antibiotic stewardship program in the hospital setting.
  2. Describe best practices to reduce central line associated blood stream infections in children.
  3. Recognize clinical markers associated with pediatric sepsis.
  4. Describe classification systems for peripheral IV infiltration in children and interventions to reduce their harm in children.
  5. Identify methods to reduce the risk of injury to patients and employees during pediatric behavioral events.
