UCP Professional Learning Series: “Constraint Therapy for Children with Hemiplegic CP: What you need to know - from the Brain to the Clinic!”

Constraint therapy is a form of intense motor practice that helps to promote hand use in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Utilizing research from a translational neuroscience network called CP-NET, Dr. Fehlings will present findings on how constraint therapy impacts the brain and highlight the importance of starting constraint therapy as early as possible. The talk will also cover practical aspects of providing constraint therapy within a developmental framework for babies, preschoolers and school age children. Important partnerships with parents and occupational therapists will be highlighted.

Objectives:

1) Provide a clinical definition of constraint therapy for hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP);

2) Highlight research on underlying neural mechanisms of action of constraint therapy in HCP;

3) Highlight practical aspects of providing constraint therapy within a developmental framework for babies, preschoolers and school age children.
