Within the last 20 years, essential oil usage has increased in hospital settings. Essential oils are used for many different reasons, such as helping a patient relax before a painful procedure. The oil can also help decrease pain and provide overall comfort. In 2005, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare completed a research study that showed essential oils improve a patient’s overall comfort after surgery.

What Is an Essential Oil?

Essential oils come from plants and can add comfort to your care. The oils will not replace medicines or medical treatments. They are meant to be used in addition to your treatment plan.

How Can the Essential Oil Mandarin Help Me During My Visit?

The smell of mandarin can help you relax or be calm during your visit. Mandarin also has been known to decrease spasms, aid digestion, calm restlessness, and help with sleep. At Gillette, we will place a small amount (one to two drops) of the mandarin oil on a Band-Aid® or cotton ball so that you are able to smell it. We also can massage it onto your skin.

Are There Any Side Effects or Precautions When Using This Oil?

Mandarin is a very safe oil in small amounts. However, do not use this oil if you have a citrus allergy. The oils that Gillette uses are 100 percent pure, meaning no chemicals have been added. This means allergic reactions are less likely. There are very few allergies to the pure mandarin oil.

Keep all oils out of children’s reach. Do not drink any essential oil.

How Much Mandarin Is Safe to Use and How Can I Use It?

Mandarin works better when used in small amounts. True mandarin can be smelled when only one to two drops are placed on a cotton ball or Band-Aid®.

Ask your nurse for more information on how you can use the mandarin oil to meet your care needs.
