Our New PICU is Up and Running!

Some Mondays can’t be over soon enough.  But for patients and staff here at Gillette, this Monday is cause for celebration! That’s because, starting today, Gillette’s expanded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is open and serving patients. Our new PICU, located in space formerly used by Rehabilitation Therapies, looks drastically different than when we first began our St. Paul expansion project last fall.

But we couldn’t open our PICU without giving employees, patient families, and the public a sneak peek!  So, last week, we hosted an open house and tour for our new space. Here’s just a few examples of what visitors saw.

This PICU bed is equipped with the very latest technology to help patients heal. Special touches like child-themed blankets and pillows enhance comfort for both patients and families.

Many of the special features in our PICU, like this couch, came from family suggestions: every room is private, each has space for a family member to sleep overnight, and each includes storage space for family belongings.

No, this machine doesn’t usually dispense candy! It’s an advanced piece of technology that stores and dispenses medications.

As part of the open house celebration, we invited three Gillette families — all whose children had spent time in our PICU — to interact with staff and share their experiences. As you can see, they reconnected with some familiar faces!

Bethany Pearson with chaplain Helen O'Brien. Bethany spent time in Gillette’s PICU recovering from a major car accident.

The Fly family with Gillette PICU nurse Hannah. The family’s youngest daughter, Kimberly, was a patient for nearly 2 months recovering from a serious illness.

Our bigger and better PICU is just the beginning! A new patient-care building opens later this year, just across the street from the hospital.  And we’ll soon begin renovating our surgical suites. Click here to see how you can help us complete our surgery project.

I have nothing but RESPECT for all the work and core values that Gillette Childrens Hosp and staff excel in, and how far your facility has advanced since I worked for the B.O.for M.E.R.A.
