Scheuermann’s Disease

Scheuermann’s is a developmental disease found in adolescents in which abnormal development of spine vertebrae leads to wedge-shaped rather than rectangular vertebrae. The wedge-shaped vertebrae don’t stack straight, but instead curve forward. The disorder is named for Dr. Scheuermann of Denmark, who first recognized the disorder.

Causes

The cause of Scheuermann’s is unknown, but it often runs in families. Children and teens with a family history of the disease should be checked regularly.

Treatment

Proper treatment during the growing years can correct the spine’s forward curve. The most common treatment for Scheuermann’s Disease combines special exercises with a brace. Surgery might be needed, however, if the back is severely rounded or causing major discomfort.

Associated Problems

Left untreated in adolescence, the disease can progress rapidly during growth spurts. This can cause pain, discomfort and a rounded back.
