Endocrinology

Many people who have disabilities experience endocrine problems—including growth disorders, hormonal imbalances and bone health issues—as a result of their underlying conditions. The endocrinology team at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare specializes in meeting the unique needs of children who have disabilities and complex conditions.

Our endocrinologists also diagnose and treat children who show signs of Prader-Willi syndrome. They are experts at managing the effects of various medications on growth and bone health.

Conditions We Treat

Gillette’s endocrinology team treats the hormonal and growth-related effects of a wide variety of conditions, including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, juvenile arthritis and more. We diagnose and treat children who show signs of:

  • Prader-Willi Syndrome
  • Osteogenesis imperfecta and other causes of frequent fractures and bone fragility
  • Growth concerns or inconsistent growth patterns
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Bone deformities

In addition, we treat children who have a history of taking certain medications, including anticonvulsants and steroids, or who have experienced prolonged periods of immobilization (little or no movement).

Tests and Treatments We Offer

For some patients, endocrinology treatment involves improving the diet, addressing vitamin and mineral deficiencies, or changing medications. We also might recommend weight-bearing activities to strengthen bones and improve balance.

In cases where changing lifestyles and medications aren’t enough, we might prescribe additional medications to diminish the breakdown of bone or improve other aspects of endocrine health.

To diagnose and monitor problems related to bone density, we offer dual-energy radiography absorptiometry (DXA) scans.
