Course Description and Objectives

Course Description

Keynote talks from our invited speakers, research presentations and case study discussions make this a rich, collaborative day. This year the focus will be on congenital and acquired upper and lower extremity deformities. We look forward to an interesting and thought-provoking experience lead by our invited speakers, Dr. John Birch and Dr. Mark Dahl, internationally recognized leaders in the area of limb deformity correction.

Course Objectives

At the completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe current treatment options for limb length inequalities.
  • Describe current treatment options for upper extremity and lower extremity deformities; congenital and acquired.
  • Define conditions for use of external fixation as well as intramedullary distraction in the treatment of limb length inequalities and deformities.
  • Discuss future options in the prevention as well as surgical treatment of extremity deformities.

Keynote Speakers

John Birch, MD John G. Birch, MD

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children

“I have had the privilege of working in a charitable institution dedicated to the care of children with orthopedic problems for over 30 years. I have a particular interest in lower extremity and spinal deformities, and have reveled in watching the evolution of our understanding and treatment of these disorders. The opportunity to witness and participate in this evolution is the result of (at least!) two things: free and open exchange of knowledge at national and international levels; and collaborative work with an uncelebrated team of multi-national, multi-disciplinary experts dedicated to the goal of making what we do, better.”

Mark Dahl, MD

Mark Dahl, MD

Gillette Children’s

“My practice has evolved into a diverse and exciting combination of lower extremity cartilage preservation and arthroplasty, limb lengthening and deformity reconstruction. I've spent decades traveling the world, learning and collaborating with experts in areas of trauma, joint replacement, pediatrics and congenital and acquired limb deformities. I often seek a multidisciplinary solution to complex problems as well as a simple solution to simple problems.”
