How does Xeomin work?
Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) is made from the bacteria that cause botulism. Just like in Botox, neurotoxin in Xeomin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity, including muscle spasms and decreased muscle tone that might be painful.
What is the difference between Xeomin and Botox?
Both Xeomin and Botox are botulinum toxin type A products. However, Xeomin is free of accessory proteins, while Botox is not.
What are the common and serious side effects of Xeomin?
Common side effects include:
- Muscle weakness in the injected muscle
- Discomfort or pain at the injection site, which can be alleviated with acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ice packs
Xeomin might cause serious side effects that can be life-threatening. Patients should get immediate medical help and notify their provider if any of the following occurs after treatment with Xeomin:
- Trouble with swallowing, speaking, or breathing
- Spread of toxin effects
- Symptoms include:
- Loss of strength, and muscle weakness, all over the body
- Double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids
- Hoarseness or change or loss of voice
- Loss of bladder control

How often is Xeomin given?
The effects of Xeomin usually last about 12 weeks. The effects can last longer or shorter, depending on the person.
Are there cost advantages to using Xeomin?
Xeomin comes in single-use vials of 50 units and 100 units, while Botox only comes in 100-unit vials. The Xeomin 50-unit vial might allow for more precise billing and help reduce waste.
How do you convert dose amounts between Xeomin and Botox?
There is no established 100 percent accuracy in converting between Xeomin and Botox doses. Most health care providers switching from one medication to the other use the same dose for both. However, there are NO manufacturer guidelines about this topic.
How is Xeomin stored?
Xeomin can be shipped and stored at room temperature as long as the vial is unopened. Unopened Xeomin vials don’t need to be kept cold during transportation and storage to maintain product potency.
