Trust Your Instincts: A Craniosynostosis Journey

The Quinn family shares their experience about their newborn daughter receiving a diagnosis of craniosynostosis. They appreciate the Gillette team approach to care which allows for collaboration between the neurosurgeon and the plastic surgeon to formulate a clear, patient-specific plan. Two surgeons working side-by-side in the operating room decreases operating time and reduces the length of exposure a child has to general anesthesia.

How We Monitor and Treat Amniotic Band Syndrome

Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) occurs when a fetus becomes entangled in fibrous, a string-like strand called amniotic bands.While in the womb as the fetus continues to grow, some of their bands will not grow with them. This causes their blood flow to get blocked and disrupts continued growth and development.

What Are Tethered Spinal Cord Symptoms in Children?

A tethered spinal cord occurs when the spinal cord is pulled down and is stuck or attached to the base of the spine’s surrounding tissue. This prevents the spinal cord from moving freely in the spinal canal as it normally would. If the spinal cord is tethered, it will stretch like a rubber band in response to the restriction. The pressure from this may cause pain and permanent damage to the spinal tissue and nerves if left untreated.
