Wearing a spine brace may feel new for you and your family. You might need it after surgery or an injury. The brace helps protect your back and stops movements like bending or twisting so you can heal. This information, along with your care team’s advice, will help you know what to expect.

General Guidelines

  • How long you wear the brace depends on your condition and your provider’s instructions.
  • Always wear a snug shirt or body sock under the brace to protect your skin. Pull it tight so there are no wrinkles. Change it every day, or more often if you sweat a lot. Moisture can cause skin problems, infections, and odor.
  • Check your skin often. If you see a skin color change or skin indentation lasting more than 30 minutes, it could mean there is too much pressure. Call your orthotist.
  • Do not use lotions, creams, or oils on your skin under the brace. They can make your skin soft and cause blisters or other skin irritations. If you get bruises or blisters, call your orthotist right away.
  • Take off the brace for bathing. Your spine provider will give you specific instructions on how you can bathe while you’re not wearing it.
  • If you have an incision, continue to care for it as directed by your spine provider.

Cleaning the Brace

  • Keep your brace clean. Wipe it down at least once a day with rubbing alcohol.
  • Let it dry for at least 10 minutes before putting it back on.
  • You can also wipe any pads glued in the brace.

Follow-Up Care

  • You will have a follow-up visit with your spine provider after getting your brace.
  • See your orthotist that same day to check the brace.
  • When scheduling appointments, request an appointment with OPS to have your brace checked.
  • If you have any questions or concerns with your brace, call OPS (Orthotics, Prosthetics and Seating) to talk to a spine orthotist.
