Better Access and More Services at the Core of Changes at Gillette

Gillette Children's is making changes to help more families have more convenient access to our expert care and to better serve our community.

Our newly renovated Maple Grove Clinic opened Dec. 1, 2020 and means Gillette can provide more services and offer coordinated and comprehensive care in one location in the West Metro area.

Visitors to our main campus in St. Paul will notice an older office building on the corner of Jackson and University Avenue is being demolished. Once the demolition is complete construction will begin on a new multipurpose parking facility to provide more accessible parking for our employees. The new facility will also include more workspace for staff, accessible drop-off areas for patients and new spaces to serve our families. The new facility is expected to be completed in 2022.

Like hospitals in Minnesota and across the country, Gillette was significantly affected by COVID-19. We’ve had more than 23,000 appointments cancelled between March and September and we have had to make some staffing changes to help address some of these challenges. We have carefully evaluated these construction projects and have determined this is still the correct decision for the organization to assure adequate parking, increase patient access and provide much needed care and services where our patients need it most.

Gillette secured private financing for the parking ramp project well before the COVID-19 outbreak and notified St. Paul officials of the plans to move the project forward at that time. When Gillette began to face the challenges of COVID-19, we had already selected the construction firm and design team and had started the initial design process for the project.

“Gillette Children's provides world-class care to our patients to help them realize their full potential,” says Micah Niermann, MD, Gillette's Medical Director. “This has been the mission of Gillette since its founding in St. Paul nearly 125 years ago and remains our mission as we move our work forward and commit to serving generations to come. We believe now more than ever, enhancing patient access, improving employee space and affirming our commitment to our community is needed.”

Gillette President and CEO, Barbara Joers, says it's important for families around Minnesota to have access to our care and services. "Throughout our history Gillette is proud that we're able to meet the patient where they need to be met. As we've grown so has our coverage area and we continue to have care closer to home for all that we serve."

We are excited to embark on these projects and build on the proud history of Gillette for generations to come.
