What is your position and role at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare?
I have been working as an Outpatient Occupational Therapist (OT) at Gillette for 3 years now, and have recently taken on responsibilities as the outpatient lead therapist at the St. Paul campus.
As an Occupational Therapist what does your average day look like?
My average day is anything but average, which is what I love about it so much! Most of my day is spent working with, and frankly, playing with my patients. I also get to do many other interesting tasks like evaluate my kiddos for any specialty equipment needs, fabricating hand splints, determining the best positioning for Augmentative and Alternative Communication Devices (AAC), and soon I am going to start doing some sessions in our new therapy pool this summer.
As the outpatient lead therapist, I am also tasked with completing any necessary department projects that serve to help our therapy team run more smoothly and cohesively. This means, contacting our families and following up on any questions they may have, as well as serving as point-person for any external vendors or providers that may have questions about outpatient therapies at Gillette.
Do you have a favorite Gillette story or memory?
When I was doing coverage at the Gillette Maple Grove Clinic, I had an evaluation on my schedule for a 15-month-old girl. When I walked out to the waiting room her mom couldn’t have been more surprised to see me. At first, I had no idea why, but it turned out that one year prior during my final rotation for OT school, I had been her daughter’s primary OT! That she remembered me from that long ago really brought home and reminded me of the impact that one interaction can have when it comes to working with our families.
For me, those little moments and the relationships I can form with my patients as well as everyone who cares about them, it’s what inspires me and makes me excited to go to work every day.
What are some of your hobbies outside of work?
I love running, and more recently became the proud owner of a 4-month-old lab. I am hoping he will be a great running buddy, but I might wait until it warms up a bit. I also love taking Barre fitness classes, baking, doing crossword puzzles and kayaking.
What is one fun fact about you?
I want to take a road trip across the US and visit all of the lower 48 contingent states plus Alaska at some point in my life.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
I have many places on my travel bucket list including Australia, Spain, Greece, Iceland, and Italy to name a few.
