When a child is experiencing seizures or other neurological symptoms, parents and referring providers are often in overdrive to get a health evaluation and some answers.

Advanced practice providers (APPs) are a great resource for delivering the appropriate care. We can order diagnostic testing and assessments for patients,” says Gillette Children’s neurology pediatric nurse practitioner, Janelle Pasch-Berglund

“At Gillette, we have five neurology nurse practitioners, and we all have advanced training and an expansive knowledge of neurological care,” Pasch-Berglund adds. “Because our department has a larger number of APPs, compared to other pediatric care places, we are typically able to see our patients faster due to more flexibility in our schedules.”

Gillette is a regional leader in neurology care

Gillette is a regional leader in pediatric neurology and neurosurgery and treats children and teens who have complex neurological conditions and injuries that affect the spinal cord, neck, nerves and/or brain.

Early care is critically important in cases of neurological and neurodevelopmental delays. Some of the most common neurological conditions seen at Gillette include seizures, questionable neurological events, developmental concerns, toe walking, cerebral palsy symptoms and other neurological concerns.

The Gillette neurology nurse practitioners start an initial visit by doing an extensive assessment and, if needed, ordering diagnostic testing. These tests include electroencephalography (EEG), video EEG, imaging, and laboratory studies.

Gillette offers a comprehensive first seizure evaluation where one of our neurological experts evaluates a child to determine the seizure type, cause and the risk of having more seizures.

An important part of the neurological team

“The APPs play an important role in the neurology care team,” Pasch-Berglund says. “We are frequently the first provider experience for a family. We set the standards of providing appropriate, thoughtful, and unique care.”

Pasch-Berglund believes the extensive training and experience of the neurology nurse practitioners at Gillette provides an example of the strong care offered at Gillette.

“Our providers, which consist of neurologists, and neurology nurse practitioners, are passionate about taking care of our patients and families,” Pasch-Berglund says. “Our great team also includes physicians with other specialty areas, neurodiagnostic staff, neuropsychologists, psychologists, genetic counselors and many more.”

The Gillette neurology team takes pride in tailoring a treatment plan for each child and helping to support families during an often-stressful time.

“I love working at Gillette and knowing that every one of our patients is unique in their own way and their diagnostic and treatment plans needs to be adjusted accordingly,” Pasch-Berglund adds. “We can help a family find the answers they need.”
