A Conversation Between Fellows

Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Fellows Amy and Jeffrey at Gillette Childrens

At Gillette, we understand that choosing a fellowship program is a difficult and important decision. So, we sat down with two of our current Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine fellows to talk about how they made their decision, why they ultimately chose Gillette, and having been here, what they think now? Read the full A Conversation Between Fellows story.

The fellowship at Gillette offers exposure to nearly every aspect of care that pediatric rehabilitation physicians provide. This program gives you the opportunity to learn everything you will need to be successful in this field. –Amy Authement

The care provided at Gillette is incredibly collaborative. Here, we all come together in the same room to assess the patient. Then we leave, discuss the best course of action, and go back to the patient and his or her family with a plan. It’s the perfect environment in which to learn.

About Our Fellowship Program

The pediatric rehabilitation medicine fellowship at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare is a two-year, clinical fellowship sponsored by the University of Minnesota. The fellowship is designed to train academic pediatric rehabilitation medicine specialists to provide the highest level of clinical care and to advance the frontiers of pediatric rehabilitation medicine through research and education.

Over the course of the two-year program, fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with other Gillette specialists to provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient pediatric medicine and rehabilitation services.

Conditions We Treat

Our rehabilitation medicine specialists treat children, teens and adults who have a wide variety of complex conditions. We also treat typically developing children who require rehabilitation services following a traumatic or sports injury. Many Gillette patients benefit from some form of rehabilitation medicine or therapy during their experience with us.

Some of the conditions we treat most often include:

Why Gillette?

Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare has been participating in the training of physical medicine and rehabilitation residents from the University of Minnesota for over twenty years. Gillette gained accreditation status for the University of Minnesota's Pediatric Medicine Fellowship Program in July 2006. Fellows are either graduates of an accredited physical medicine and rehabilitation residency program or a combined pediatrics and physical medicine and rehabilitation residency program.

In addition to independent reading and study, the fellowship includes clinical, didactic and research experiences. By working with the unique patient population at Gillette, fellows will increase their knowledge of disabling pediatric conditions.

The main training site of the fellowship program is Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare, an inpatient and outpatient multidisciplinary facility serving the needs of people who have complex conditions, rare disorders and traumatic injuries that affect the musculoskeletal and neurological systems. Additional rotation sites include the Children’s Hospitals of Minnesota, Regions Hospital and Fairview Medical Center (all as part of the consult service).

Although the fellowship program is supervised primarily by board-certified pediatric rehabilitation medicine specialists, fellows also interact with a number of other educators, including: pediatric orthopedic surgeons, pediatric neurologists who also have neuromuscular expertise, pediatric neurosurgeons, pediatric rheumatologists, pediatric urologists and pediatricians.

Lots of organizations say they make a difference in the world. At Gillette, we prove it—every day. See our honors and awards to find out why Gillette is recognized as a Twin Cities and national top workplace.

Commitment to Teaching

The faculty and staff at Gillette have a strong commitment to teaching. The culture at Gillette is one of outstanding patient care and unparalleled resident and fellow education and training. We are proud of the fellows who have completed our program, all of whom are now working at national and international institutions.
